Close-Up: Jan Garcia's Photography Work Lounge

jangarcia_01.jpgSummer's a great time for one's biggest steps in life; the big "M." Yes, it's funny that we should mention marriage on a tech blog, but there are tons of photographs taken on that special day, which is why we're more than happy to showcase photographer Jan Garcia's immaculate work-live space.

jangarcia_02.jpgBy combining a large number of design furniture pieces, technology that complements rather than detracting from the space, and showcasing recent favorite photography canvas with tract lighting, Jan has created a space that's highly inviting and comfortable.

What's your philosophy on how to integrate your technology into your living space?: I'm a fan of great design even for the most random product so everything I buy has to either not stick out too much or look great with the rest of the furnishings. We meet our clients here so everything has to pretty spiffy.

Favorite Feature: Having great big displays for both computing and TV viewing. AND the chocolates that I set out for clients that I always end up eating.

What Friends Say: They dig the furnishings and the colors.
Best Advice: Spend on stuff you care about. For me it's my displays and my seating. Skimp on the stuff that you must have but don't care about.
Dream Source/Inspiration: Design and furnishings publications and websites. Also visiting cool homes and studios.
Favorite Source: Amazon, B&H Photo, Ikea, Room & Board.
Biggest Challenge: Making a small space look comfortable and roomy.
Biggest Embarrassment: The storage closet. I have a giant bear-sized bag of shipping peanuts in there.

oh gorgeous!! what a very professional and comfortable space. it's incredibly warm and inviting, but also shows the photog has a great eye for composition - even interiors! :)

i love the horizontal image above the secondary workstation. i think it's brilliant to have such stunning and large pieces in the room. smaller pieces, while "easier" to do, would never ever have that kind of impact. i imagine you have a lot of would-be clients and post-wedding couples come in, right? i'd be impressed, for sure!

i also checked out your website - what gorgeous work!! i love the ratio of your photos - that great horizontal and wide angle, it makes the photo-viewing so much more in your face and intimate - much like your live/work space.

i think you totally succeeded!

cheers!

Looks like that retro-lookin mp3/xm radio player featured a while back.. and next to it looks like an air filter thing.. all guesses though...

Katy, thanks for the nice words. Our visitors really love the large canvases on the wall so I guess they are doing the job! That little clear stick thingy is my speaker system, Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks. They're pretty cool.

Ekoshyun, that's an old boom box that I found at a thrift store. Still works great and has an AUX input so I can just plug in an iPod and pumps out the tunes. That other thing is a wooden vase that just sits in the corner.

Your design philosophy is so simple yet so complex and very inspiring. Thank you for letting us in!

Two questions: What server unit is that (make/model)? and what is the name of the set of drawers underneath the table with the boom box? Both of them are really well designed.

Thanks.

Uh, never mind about the Server, it had it's name right on the LCD display:

What are those devices on top of it and the drawers?

Danny & Carlos, the devices on top of the LaCie are Lexar card readers that I use to import my files. They're super fast. The set of drawers are from IKEA, ALEX. I believe they are fairly new. Thanks for cool comment!

This is a beautiful studio/lounge! I love it!
May I ask where you got (or could get) those canvas prints, and approximate pricing?

Which Mac Pro config is that? I'm thinking of making the big jump, and trying to decide the config...

Also checked out your photog website...great design as well, and truly wonderful photos! :)
