Your mobile phone as a personal shopping assistant? That is what a supermarket in Germany is doing right now. While we are all familiar with the self serve checkout aisles, this supermarket makes those automated aisles feel like something out of the 1950's.
By scanning all the product bar codes as you work your way through the store, by the end of your trip you can skip the waiting and unloading of your shopping cart. One button press on your mobile phone results in a single bar code that includes all your purchases. Pop that code under the scanner at the checkout and pay by cash, credit or even fingerprint.
This is something you have to see. Check out the video and Roger the customer service robot.

this has been available in japan for a while. super-convenient, can be used to buy tickets for the train or at vending machines as well as other participating retail locations. however, this concentration on putting everything in one place will bite you in the butt if you're anything like me and lose your cellphone at least once a year.

Well of course I want this. And not just for the market. I want it for Costco. I have suggested opening an express lane or registry-type shopping to Costco for *years*, and they refuse to do it. That's right. My local Costcos force you to wait in long lines even if you came in for two bulk items.

My husband and I tasted wine in Napa Valley with appliances like those shown. Convenient for the store owner, who didn't have to really interact with us if he had another customer to ring up or something, but we missed the conversation we'd had with winemakers at other tasting rooms.
